winter blog 2008
December 30, 2007:
December has brought us significant amounts of snow. We understand we were three inches below the record amount for December, for the last 40 years. We received almost 10 inches of new snow yesterday and more is expected for New Years Eve. Snowmobiling has started early this year and everyone is excited for that. Northern Maine was also blessed with some warmer weather the last week or so. Temps seem to be hovering in the mid 20's which is perfect. November and early December brought us colder weather than in the past years. The pond out front seems to be frozen but unsure of the ice thickness. Ice fishing season starts in two days. We've been hearing a steady roar of snowmobiles lately and Patten seems to be "booming". Our siberian husky "Tucker" is in his glory with winter upon us. Congrats to the Patriots for a 16-0 PERFECT Season !!!!!

Happy New Year from Shin Pond !!!! The new year has given us another major storm dumping almost 12" of new snow and we are still shoveling out. It is possible we have surpassed last years total snowfall already and winter has just really begun. Time for the snowshoes and cross country skis to come out. The Moose are showing up more on the roads these days to get a lil taste of salt and easier walking than in the woods. Supposed to be chilly this evening then warming up later this weekend. The snowmobile trails are looking good with grooming being done by the local clubs.

The January Thaw is certainly here !! It has been in the 40's the last week and the snow has melted immensely. It really feels like spring out there and the warm weather is sign of spring so far away..... Recorded highs were recorded a few days ago. If we didnt look at the calendar, we'd swear it was March or April. Sledding, snowshoeing, skiing still continue as there is a good base to go on. Saw a raccoon today, must be confused by the "heatwave". Snow is forecasted in the next few days.
